Attendance & Participation

Participation

You are expected to be well prepared and actively involved during every class period. I expect you to contribute to workshops, join in discussions, and participate in class activities.

Attendance

An excessive number of absences, especially without notification, could result in you being asked to withdraw from the class. Otherwise, 2 absences are allowed.  All other absences will result in a how your grade is figured according to the contracted expectations.

Please contact me—by email, phone, or dropping a note in my box—if you are not going to be able to attend class so that I can plan class accordingly.

Conferences

Scheduled conferences are mandatory when held in lieu of class. You may schedule conferences with me at other times. If you schedule a conference, please remember to attend.

Tardiness

Also, please be on time to class. Tardiness can delay the class, and you may miss valuable information that is given at the beginning of the class period.

Materials

Everyday, you will need to bring the following to class with you: paper, a writing utensil, a colored pen for workshops, your texts, any handouts read for the day, and completed assignments due that day.  All assignments due online should be submitted by the beginning of class the day they are due, unless otherwise noted on the schedule.

Peer Review Workshops

Workshops will work two ways. All workshops will require materials to be submitted two days before workshop for review and feedback by peers. Multimodal workshop will involve feedback from the whole class and intensive feedback from a small group. Paper workshops will only involve intensive feedback from a small group. If you need to miss a workshop, please see me so that we can plan on how you can still earn most of your workshop points. If you do not see me in advance of the workshop being missed, making up the points may be more difficult. If you show up to workshop without a draft of your essay, I may ask you to leave, resulting in a loss of attendance and participation points for that day, along with detracting from your essay process grade.

Conduct

You are in college and an adult, or if you are not a legal adult, you will be treated as such in this class (i.e. the material and discussions will not be censored if you are under 18). I expect you to conduct yourself as such. You should be responsible and answerable for yourself and your work. As such, I expect that you will do your best to prove yourself.

Cell Phones, Computers, and Other Possible DIsruptions

Cell Phones: Please turn your cell phones off or put them on silent before entering class. If you are expecting an emergency call, i.e. your grandmother is horribly ill or your cat is in the hospital, please let me know, keep your phone on silent, and leave the room to answer the call. Please refrain from playing games or texting during class. Like taking emergency calls, you should leave the room to respond to urgent texts. Your friends and your mother will understand if you do not respond until class is over.

Computers: If you choose to bring your computer to class, please use it only for class work while in class. Do not chat or surf the internet or answer your email. Use it only for notes, in class writing activities, presentations, etc.

If either your cell phone or your computer are disturbing the class I will ask you to put them away and I may ask you to leave if the disruption continues.

Class Visitors: On occasion, parents, children, or friends may ask to attend class with you (or your childcare provider may suddenly become unavailable). I ask that if you do plan on bringing a visitor to the classroom to please notify me ahead of time, if at all possible, and that your visitor respect the rules and the dynamic of the classroom. If your visitor disrupts class or becomes disrespectful to the class or the other students, I reserve the right to ask your visitor to leave the classroom.
